Summary

26 September 2014, students were summoned by the police to pay fine for hanging a banner in order to commemmorate the 19 Sep 2006 coup on a flyover on Vibhavadi Rangsit road.

Background of accused

All three students are the members of Thai Student Center for Democracy (TSCD), who are democracy activists, and who were imposed by the Army to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to stop any political activities after they held the ‘eating sandwiches’ activity for anti-coup protest.

The three students previously signed an MOU with the Army, not to be involved in any political activities.

Details of offence according to charge

The students hung a black banner on a pedestrian bridge in front of the Thairath Newspaper office, where Nuamthong Praiwan remembrance pillar was erected, in order to commemorate 8 years of the 19-November Coup. The message was read "Mr. Thai Democracy. Born 24 Jun 1932. Died 19 Sep 2006. And the latest?"

Circumstance of arrest

Sutthisan Police officers summoned the students to report to the Sutthisan Police Station. The students reported at 15.00 of 26 September 2014.

Progress of case

26 September 2014

15.30 : The students went to the police station with a lawyer from Thai Lawyers for Haman Rights. The police led the group to the investigation room, which was a building located at the back of the station. While in the investigation room, the students mentioned that, together, there was a plainclothes military personnel.

18.00 hrs: One of the students informed that the police would release them, once the press left. Meanwhile, another police officer talked to the awaiting friends and confirmed the release after the press left.

19.30 hrs: After the press left, each student was fined 1,000 Baht and then all were released.
