Summary

On 11 September 2010, Mr. Surachai Sae-Dan, gave a public speech at the Doi Saket Stadium, Chiangmai with parts of it offending, defaming or insulting the King, the Queen and the crown princess. Becuase Mr. Surachai plead guilty, the Court reduced the sentence by half to 2.5 year in prison. In total, compiling with five other lèse-majesté cases, Mr. Surachai would have to serve 12 years 6 months imprisonment.

Background of accused

Mr. Surachai Danwattananusorn (Sae-Dan) was a member of the Communist Party of Thailand (CPT) who was a former political prisoner on Communist conviction. Mr. Danwattananusorn later became the New Aspiration Party member by the invitation of General Chawalit Yongchaiyut, the party leader himself. Mr. Danwattananusorn also ran for the senate in Nakorn Si Thammarat Province as well as for the house representation under Pheu Thai Party.
